Martin looks forward to Rovinj race after strong 5th in Qualifying

Red Bull Air Race, Rovinj No Comments

ROVINJ, Croatia – Martin Sonka of the Czech Republic grabbed a strong fifth place in Qualifying on Saturday for the Red Bull Air Race World Championship race in Rovinj, Croatia on Sunday. The former Czech Air Force fighter pilot flew well in the difficult, wind-swept track set up in the Adriatic Sea just off the coast of Rovinj and posted a time that was just a fraction of a second slower than the fastest Qualifier Paul Bonhomme of Britain. Sonka is hoping to get the second podium of his career after taking third place at the final race of the 2014 season in Spielberg, Austria – not far from the racecourse in Rovinj.

„I would like to score a place on the podium,“ said Sonka. „We are almost on the top but we have to show this in the race on Sunday.“ Sonka, who has flown well in training ahead of the Qualifying session, is looking forward to heavy support from fans from the nearby Czech Republic.

Martin pleased after posting third fastest time in Rovinj training

Red Bull Air Race, Rovinj No Comments

ROVINJ, Croatia – Martin Sonka of the Czech Republic posted a red-hot time in training on Thursday ahead of the third stop of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship in Rovinj, Croatia, taking third place on the time sheets behind only Britain’s Paul Bonhomme and Australia’s Matt Hall.

Sonka, clearly flying well at the first European stop of the season, flew brilliantly on the difficult track set up off the coast of Croatia on the Adriatic Sea and stopped the clock in 54.396 seconds. That was just behind the time of 53.471 by Bonhomme, the leader of the world’s fastest motorsport series, and close to Hall’s time of 54.192. Sonka, a former Czech Air Force fighter pilot, is looking for a strong result in the race in Croatia, one of the closest stops this year to his home in the Czech Republic, after a disappointing 10th place at the last race in Chiba, Japan.
„I feel very good here,“ said Sonka, who got a career-best third place in the last stop of the 2014 season in nearby Spielberg, Austria. „We feel like this a home race. I like it here, it’s almost like home. I travel often to Croatia. I know this area really well. The environment is beautiful and compared to Japan it’s a complete different country.“

Sonka hopes winds make Chiba track more difficult

Chiba, Red Bull Air Race No Comments

CHIBA, Japan – Martin Sonka of the Czech Republic is hoping for a windswept Red Bull Air Race World Championship track in Chiba, Japan this weekend that will make it more difficult than it appears to be at first glance. The former Czech Air Force fighter pilot excels on the more technical tracks and was at first worried that the fast out-and-back one-lap track in Chiba might not be as challenging for pilot skills as other tighter two lap tracks in the world’s fastest motorsport series have offered in the past. But then he saw how the powerful winds and waves ripping across Tokyo Bay onto the Makuhari Beach and realized it might not be such an easy track to fly afterall.

“I don’t really like this track – my favorite tracks are the more technical tracks with tight turns,” said Sonka ahead of training for the weekend’s Qualifying and race – his 15th career race. “This is a very straight track with two turns. It’s straight and fast. It’s more about airplanes. I think there are probably some faster airplanes in the field so we’ll see what happens. But the weather could be a factor. It’s been very windy and we haven’t been able to train yet.”
