Silver freestyle at the World Air Games

Aerobatics No Comments

Dubai (UAE) – It was a successfull season for Martin but really long as well. 4th place overall in the Red Bull Air Race, silver medal in freestyle at the World Aerobatic Championships, gold medal in aerobatics and freestyle at Czech nationals and on top of that silver in freestyle at the World Air Games in Dubai. Therefore Martin can’t wait to relax during his winter break.

Martin was leaving to Dubai with mixed feelings. He knew he would have to fly borrowed plane which was difficult because of different setting. Therefore he hadn’t set himself high goals for the WAG. „I have to say there isn’t much energy remaining, I hadn’t had time to practice aerobatics since August so I went competing to Dubai without big expectations, in additin I flew borrowed plane with different setting, therefore I didn’t know what to expect. After all, I made some mistakes in aerobatic leg of the WAG so I ended 4th overall, fortunately I lifted my spirits in freestyle – where I took silver. Eventually, it wasn’t so bad.“

Sonka stumbles in Las Vegas but holds onto 4th place

Las Vegas, Red Bull Air Race No Comments

LAS VEGAS (USA) – Martin Sonka’s hot streak in the Red Bull Air Race came to an end in Las Vegas on Sunday when the former Czech Air Force fighter pilot fell to eighth place after getting knocked out in the Round of 8 on a penalty-marred run. But Sonka finished the season in fourth place overall in a 14-pilot field, a strong improvement from 2014 when he was eighth out of 12 pilots.

„It’s very disappointing because we analysed the data from Qualifying and looked at the mistakes,“ he said. „I eliminated those in the Round of 14. In the Round of 8 it was a strange situation for me. I was told that the wind was blowing one way, but it was actually blowing the other. That’s what caused the pylon hit. And I was trying really hard because I was up against Matt (Hall), and that’s why I got the other penalty.“

The battle for third place overall could go right down to the wire with five pilots still in the frame to take third. Behind Arch and Sonka are Nigel Lamb (GBR) Pete McLeod (CAN), and Matthias Dolderer (GER) — all within striking range with strong results down the home stretch. Sonka will be up against American Kirby Chambliss in the Round of 14 opening battle on Sunday.

Fourth place in 4th Final 4

Fort Worth, Red Bull Air Race No Comments

FORT WORTH, Texas (USA) – Paul Bonhomme won his fourth Red Bull Air Race of the season on Sunday in Fort Worth with a sensational performance in the Texas heat but Australia’s Matt Hall stayed right on his heels in the championship battle with a solid second place finish.

“I’m really pleased with the result. It was a tough race for us as a whole team. We were trying to find the right set up of the raceplane, we had problems with temperatures and everything. There were many up and downs all weekend and then the final run wasn’t great. It was very interesting and difficult race for us. We’ll see what happens in Las Vegas. We’ll stay fully concentrated on the flying and we’ll see what the result brings, but it’s a good chance for us to finish third in the championship, but there are some guys behind us. I’m not thinking about it, I’m just focusing on the flying.” Said Martin after his 4th Final 4 in this season.
